A NRI is a person resident outside India who is either a citizen of India or a person of Indian origin. For all official purpose the Government of India recognizes an NRI who is away from India for more than 182 days, in a year.

A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) means a foreign citizen (except Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, China, Iran, Nepal and Bhutan) who at any time held an Indian passport or whose parents or grandparents were citizens of India.

NRIs / PIOs can purchase residential and commercial properties in India. However, they are not permitted to purchase agricultural land, plantation property or farm houses.

No. NRIs and PIOs do not require prior permission of the Reserve Bank of India to acquire residential or commercial property in India.
